The Agile Fluency Game ™ — A Realistic Simulation of Agile Practices

The Agile Fluency Game ™ is a simulation of how a team adopts agile practices, referring to the Agile Fluency ™ Model, developed by James Shore and Diana Larsen.

Agile Fluency Game by Berlin Product People

James and Diana based the Agile Fluency ™ Model on their comprehensive learnings from the consulting and coaching of various agile software development teams.

The Agile Fluency ™ Model identifies several stages during the adoption of agile practices, such as XP, Scrum or DevOps, that a development team usually passes during its transition to being agile. The Agile Fluency Game ™ builds on these patterns of successful agile teams and simulates them with a European-style board game.

Learning Objective of the Agile Fluency™ Game

The strength of the Agile Fluency™ Game is derived from its emphasis on collaboration: the team wins, the team loses. The simulation thus helps to overcome the often observed chasm between the business and the engineering part of a newly formed product team.

The Agile Fluency™ Game supports the understanding of good practices from a successful agile team, for example, why technical debt needs to address regularly or why technical excellence is at the core of any agile transition that deserves this label.

How Does the Agile Fluency Game ™ Work?

The game is board game for three to four players who form a team and compete with one or two other teams during the Agile Fluency Game ™ class. The objective of the game for the players is to maximize the value that their team is contributing to customers and the organization — given available resources while dealing with occurrences along the way.

The Agile Fluency Game ™ class takes an afternoon. In the beginning, there is a brief introduction to the Agile Fluency ™ Model, followed by two rounds of the Agile Fluency Game ™ including a retrospective to share lessons learned at the end of the class.

Recommended Participants for the Agile Fluency Game ™

The game is an ideal training exercise for new members of agile software development teams who haven’t yet worked with agile practices: developers, product managers, project managers, business analysts or designers.

The game is also very well suited for managers and executives who want to gain insight into themes like business agility, agile transformations or innovative product development practices in general. The Agile Fluency Game ™ does not require specific software development knowledge as a prerequisite for a successful participation.
